I’ve been following the school fight – the courts ordered a more equable divisions of money to fund the schools or the court would shut down the school system.
A special session of the legislature is scheduled to hash out a plan, which must be presented to the court by the 30th of June.
The Dems say:
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The clock continues to tick for lawmakers to meet a Kansas Supreme Court mandate to equitably fund schools in the state.
Friday, Democrats rolled out their school finance plan that includes going back to the previous school finance formula in order to equalize the local option budget.
Democrats want to appropriate a little more than $39 million from several revenue sources to make that happen. Democratic leaders say that includes freezing the virtual school funding for full-time students at the 2014-2015 funding level.
Me? I’m inclined to say their plan is typically Democratic; borrow from peter to pay paul, and more money. Blah.
A buck is a buck. If it needs to be divided a hundred ways, a penny apiece. More? the penny gets divided.
The real fight is over the fact the governor cut the budget against the will of the Democrats and this non-equable division was their way of trying to force the governor into budget excess to pay for the cut anyway.
The State is running well into the red on the budget as it is, despite the governor’s attempts to shed the “convenient” excessive spending the Democrats and Liberal Republicans keep creeping into the state spending.
