I was slow starting today. Renter came over last evening and was worried about the grass. I told him, as part of an on-going argument of nothing, that when he was ready to put calves on the grass, do it. He didn’t need anymore permissions or encouragement.
Of course, I haven’t checked the fence in a month or so. I’m not sure he’ll do it before putting calves on the grass – matter of fact, I’m not sure he will have the calves to put on it. He has mentioned having to buy more from the auction house.
His small herd produced seven bull calves this year. He sold them all as bulls. Not too bad from a small twelve cow controlled herd. Although the one heifer he got pleased him a great deal more. She represents the future of his herd. He does have two or so cows that are getting long in the tooth, so to speak.
